6th Annual Buellton Vintage Trailer Bash 2015 September 25 - 27
175 vintage trailers with their occupants converged on the Danish Hamlet of Buellton, California to show and share their retro-vintage trailers, vehicles and accessories at the Flying Flags RV Park on Friday, September 25th. There is so much to do in the area — the Danish town of Solvang is nearby as well as a casino and wineries. In the evening there was a welcoming vintage potluck appetizer party. Folks were invited to strut their vintage apparel. It was a fun-filled way to begin the weekend. Old friends were greeted and new friends were made . . . Afterwards, a local country band played on the patio with some folks dancing and others just relaxing.
Saturday morning gave quite a few folks an opportunity to pedal their, u-m-m-m, selves all over town [actually the resort] in their pajamas on their bicycles. This activity grows larger every year. Then we prepared our trailers for the open house. Although our wagonmaster did not publicize it, the feeling was that the resort did. It was a nice visitor turnout — not too many but enough to keep us busy with the public and fellow trailerites.
In the afternoon, the motorized scooter parade began. Think all the scooters of this type may have been found and purchased or traded for shortly before the rally but keep your eyes and ears open for more finds anyway. I think David and cohorts have started something here that has yet to peek.
.
Simultaneously occurring was the reception for the new bride and groom, Christi and Steve, who tied the knot on Friday in Solvang followed by a private reception with their families and at their site with their 1954 Jewel trailer. By a committee of one, I have voted them “cutest couple”. If you know this couple, they’d most likely have your vote, too. Saturday afternoon, many of their vintage trailer friends joined them for a second reception. While a group of us were eating and enjoying their delicious hors d’oeuvres, J.T. asked the question [seemingly] innocently, “So, who got married?” Glad she enjoyed herself — a genuine wedding crasher; best laugh of the day for me. Well, maybe you had to have been there to appreciate the timing of that remark.
Then there was the huge potluck in the evening on the big, grassy field. There were plenty of choices for different palates. The long lines moved quickly. David made announcements, reviewed the activities of the weekend and introduced and toasted the new bride and groom to all the attendees to lots of cheers.
After everyone had comfortably stuffed themselves, the Vintage Vandals (a premiere vintage rock & roll band) entertained a large group of folks from whom we heard glowing reviews. They obviously enjoyed this trio’s musical talents.
Sunday morning brought forth the past, familiar sound of the Helm’s bakery truck (except we did not have an old Helm’s truck) but were equipped with a Helm’s whistle and donuts from David to pass out to the folks. Oh, were you awakened by the repeating whistle but wanted to sleep off the imbibing moments from Saturday night? If the whistle didn’t work in opening your eyes maybe the early pooch parade helped encourage movement and noise to wake you up. The donuts were a great way to say thank you for coming and a good-bye to each other until the next time . . . Thanks, David Neel, for a delightful weekend. Happy Trailering!!!
